Exercise Motivation UX Survey
Project Overview

I have been approached by a large state organization with multiple office locations to conduct a study. They want to design an exercise incentive program for their office personnel in order for the employees to achieve better health, well-being and workplace performance.

The purpose for launching this study is to understand the attitude of the full-time employees toward exercising (motivation, barriers and preferences) to achieving the optimal amount of physical activity as defined by The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (health.gov).

To identify this information, I designed an online survey to be launched through Qualtrics. Surveys are great for understanding perceptions and attitudes. This will provide an understanding of employees' attitude toward physical activity, why the individuals are prevented or motivated to exercise, and what types of physical activities are preferred .

This study is important since it provides insight into how the program should be designed to work for most of the employees. It would be time and cost saving as it would prevent the team from designing programs that will not be accepted by potential users, and would not have to be modified or started again from scratch at a later phase of development.

Please remember that most external motivators go away. For people to keep up with exercise, motivation needs to be intrinsic. Additional research would be needed to define ways for the external motivators to become intrinsic.

The study will give direction and possible features in the design stage of the program. The results will generate the following outcome:

  1. Understanding the reasons people do not get enough physical activity

  2. Understand the motivational factors to get people exercising

  3. Understanding differences in exercising preference for different demographic groups (age, gender, etc.)

  4. After gaining 1000 respondents we will be able to construct 4 personas and group them in to Bartle’s model  We will also gain an indication of the distribution of the number of employees in each group  This will allow us to make decisions regarding what personas we’ll keep in mind as we construct  If any of the persona groups consist of less than 10%, we will not take them into consideration as we design.

The data is collected by sending an email to all employees with the survey link attached. The survey states who conducts the survey, why it is important, approximately how long will it take, and that it will ensure anonymity and confidentiality. In addition cafeteria vouchers or other payment methods will be offered as an incentive.

Survey Design

Because of the length of the questions and multiple choice options, the survey has not been optimized for mobile use. Employees will be advised to use their workplace desktop computer to take the survey.

At the sponsor's request, the first section of the survey uses filtering questions so the remaining sample will include only the full-time, non-disabled, non-pregnant employees (Physical activity guidelines for women during pregnancy and the postpartum period and for adults with disabilities and select chronic conditions require additional considerations). I would suggest that the sponsor collects the data from the excluded groups as well, to be used later on, if needed, to modify programs to include the rest of the employees.

Survey logic I have used:

On all questions (except descriptive text) I have used Force Response.

Q2-Q6: Filtering questions

  1. I have used Skip Logic, to redirect the respondent to the end of the survey if they don't qualify (in this case, the program filters out are persons who work less than 30 hours per week, do not work in office setting, are pregnant  women, or who are disabled. These groups require special exercise programs).

Q7 and Q8: Ranking multiple statement questions

  1. Randomized all alternatives in order to avoid primacy effect error.

  2. Validation in order for respondent to rank at least three of the statements.

Q24: Weight

  1. Numerical Validation.
